When she’s not madly writing (Gail Sattler has over 40 published novels and novellas, plus a few works of non-fiction) she plays bass for an Elton John tribute band as well as a community jazz band, plus she plays piano for a smaller private jazz band. Christmas is behind us, Easter is a long way away, and here we are, stuck in the time between, the cold and dreary part of winter, fighting the cold, and many of us are battling snow and ice.
It may be rotten outside, but this is the downtime for the cycle of life. Nothing is growing, but it will. God promises us that.
Being buried in the cold, being dormant or hibernating, is a period of rest and preparation for the growth spurt in the spring. As people, I believe that applies just as much to us. This is a time where routine and responsibilities carry on. This is also a real good time to slow down, and talk to God. Not just asking God to help and heal, but mostly to appreciate the cycle of our own lives, and how we are working in with the rest of the world.
When it’s cold and it’s just a good time to stay inside, it’s a great time to be still and appreciate the beauty of nature in the winter. The snow, when it first comes down, is white and clean and perfect. I’m always amazed at how many snowflakes there must be, and they’re all created by God to be different. Billions of them. Just like the billions of people in the world, God has created them all different, and I’m just one.
Be still, and know that I am God. Ps. 46:10

I like to look at nature. The colors in the fall, the amazing landscapes, the flowers in the spring, and, yes, the snow all make me realize what an awesome God we serve.
