If you follow me on social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) you know that my son Tyler is at J. Robinson 10-Day Intensive Wrestling Camp in Iowa. Through this week I am sending him words of encouragement, verses and devotionals, and inspirational quotes to help him dig deep—past the pain. Past the exhaustion. Past the bumps, bruises, cuts, and scrapes. Past all the distractions and desire to quit and finish strong.
But I find I’m talking to myself too. The words I’m speaking and praying over my son are penetrating my own heart and mind.
And I’m learning, that others need to hear it too. So…here we go! Let’s do these 10-days together.

This quote made me think of my son @JROBCamps in IA this week. This is a 10-day INTENSIVE wrestling camp.
Grueling.
Challenging.
Painful.
These camps are created to generate men from boys.
Warriors from athletes.
The coaches, trainers, and staff help these wrestlers find their potential and then teach them how to achieve it–and then how to reach further, draw a new line, and continually seek a new potential.
They emphasize responsibility and accountability.
Dedication and diligence.
Integrity and strong character.
And the importance of a positive attitude.
There is no room for excuses or whining.
These wrestlers endure 4 workouts a day. A combination of
- Morning and evening runs
- Strength training
- Mat work.
They’re hot. Exhausted. Sweaty. Battered. Bruised.
They’re pushed to their limits–
and then a few more steps beyond.
It sounds awful. Doesn’t it?
But at the end, they realize
- They can do what they thought they couldn’t.
- They’re stronger than they think.
- They can do more than they believed they could.
- Their mental toughness expands as does their confidence.
- They learn how to work through adversity.
- They discover how to put burning muscles, cuts, scrapes, bruises, and exhaustion aside and GET IT DONE!
They are learning lessons
they can take with them
and apply to the rest of their lives.
Very few say, “It wasn’t worth it.”
These young men change for the better, and they discover their best.
THE CHANGE IS FOREVER
Have you caught your glimpse yet?
What passion was born?
Is it a flickering flame or an inferno?
What are you going to do with it?
Friend, this is God. Leading your to your purpose! GET AFTER IT!
It’s worth it!

Yep….It’s going to be amazing watching God “do this thing!” They have the gifts and faith, they just need to be redirected and the Lord will lead us in doing this! I see it! He’s going to silence the voice of the enemy that’s whispering non-sense in their ears and give them a desire for Him and His righteousness! It’s unfolding!!!
My heart burns for this next generation too. The first post-Christian generation. They are so directionless and lost. So hungry for love and to matter. For inner peace.
Keep up your ministry. It is SO VERY VITAL!!
About three years ago the Lord opened up and opportunity for me to mentor in my old high school and upon walking in this assignment, the Lord began teaching me exactly what ministry would look like for me. I’ve fully embraced this season of youth ministry and these are all things that I teach the youth, but even more from a purely spiritual perspective.
“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” continues to be the foundation for all my teaching. That’s the only guaranteed way for approaching and living life.
Sad for sure that this is the only way they’ll get this information, especially since Jesus gave us the mandate to make disciples, which is inclusive of all this.

Resiliance. Dedication. Focus. How to stay motivated. Responsibility. Importance of integrity and communtiy. How to set a goal and achieve it. To name a few.
I know we learn these thing in life, but we usually learn them the hard way overtime. And we often have to learn them on our own without the advantage of a mentor or coach.
These wreslters are getting a crash course with practical applications. Then they get to continue to refine those lessons and apply them to the rest of their lives. And for some of these wrestlers, this is the only place they’re going to get this information. Sad but true.
Learning in terms of what specifically?

It’s an incredible camp. But CHALLENGING in so many many ways.
Oh that we could all do this. Learn what they are learning. And then apply it as opposed to muddling through.

My oldest was on crew too! Who did your boy row for?
Agreed! Crew and rowing are equally challenging in my mind. Like nothing else.
My son was on the crew team in high school. The training was incredible. I learned a lot watching this team of kids work so hard at something they loved. It seemed grueling at times, but altogether worth it in so many ways.
